Atragon (1963) a hirata, manda, gotengo, people of mu, red satan, mysterians
(海底軍艦 Kaitei Gunkan, lit. Undersea Warship)
Aka Giant Dragon Manda
is a tokusatsu science-fiction fantasy film produced by Toho, loosely based on the 1900 Japanese adventure novel The Undersea Warship: A Fantastic Tale of Island Adventure written by Shunro Oshikawa. The film was released to Japanese theaters on December 22, 1963 and to American theaters in December 1964.
Several strange occurrences are taking place all over the world including the disappearance of two engineers. Also, former admiral Kosumi is nearly kidnapped along with his secretary, and goddaughter, Makoto Jinguji. The kidnap attempt is thwarted by photographer Susumu Hatanaka and his assistant Yoshito Nishibe. It is later revealed the Mu Empire, which disappeared 12,000 years earlier, are responsible for all the occurrences and are planning to invade the surface world to reclaim their supposed colonies. Also, the Muans manage to steal the I-403 submarine from embittered Captain Jinguji, Makoto's father, and in the process steal the plans for and even greater sub, Atragon (aka Gotengo). As the attacks by the Muans increase the world anxiously asks Jinguji for his help, even his daughter Makoto makes an impassioned plea for him to join the fight against Mu. Unfortunately, Jinguji is still bitter about the defeat of Japan in World War II and won't help. However, the fight becomes personal when Makoto and Susumu, with whom she has fallen in love, are captured by the Muans. Soon Jinguji unleashes his ultimate weapon against the Muans and their giant snakelike guardian Manda.

American International Pictures gave Atragon a successful U.S. theatrical release, beginning in 1964, with minimal changes and an English dub recorded by Titra Studios. The film's U.S. title Atragon, derived from Toho's international title Atoragon, seems to have been intended as a new name for Manda, combining the words "atomic dragon" or "Atlantis dragon." However, Titra's dubbing and AIP's promotional materials refer to the Gotengo by this name instead. This shortening from four to three syllables was the choice of AIP, since several foreign markets released the film as Atoragon (Mexico) and Ataragon (France). Although the film was in constant television syndication until the early 1980s, Atragon was not released on home video in the United States until Media Blasters' DVD in 2005.
Trivia
Atragon was theatrically released in Japan on a double feature with Operation Crazy Hong Kong and was re-released in Japan on August 1, 1968, on a double feature with Destroy All Monsters, where it was edited down to 75 minutes. The re-release version is included as a special feature on Toho's Blu-ray release.
In 1983, Masahiko Katto created a fan-made sequel to Atragon titled Continuation: Atragon (続海底軍艦 Zoku Kaitei Gunkan).
This film's titular warship, the Gotengo, has appeared in numerous pieces of media since its debut, including the films Godzilla: Final Wars and Super Fleet Sazer-X the Movie, and several Godzilla-related video games. Two craft inspired by the Gotengo, the Gohten and the Ra, appear in the film The War in Space and the two-part OVA Super Atragon, respectively.
Manda, the sea serpent kaiju introduced in this film, would later be featured in the 1968 film Destroy All Monsters, and would go on to become one of Godzilla's numerous kaiju co-stars in both film and non-film media.
The predominant themes of Atragon are nationalism, patriotism, and pride. Unchecked affirmation of these principles manifests in the central character of Captain Jinguji, who built the Gotengo for the sole purpose of reviving the Empire of Japan; and in the Empress of Mu, whose overall motive to reestablish her nation's global dominance parallels Jinguji's. Much as the aggressive policies of Japan secured the nation's defeat in World War II, the former Empire of Mu continues its siege on the surface world even after the Gotengo—their only feared adversary—rises to challenge. Both leaders vehemently reject the notion of peaceful surrender, and even international cooperation, but while Jinguji is ultimately persuaded to suppress his 20-year vendetta, the young Empress sees her defeated nation through to annihilation. Whereas Jinguji revolted in order to prepare a counterattack, the Empress acts differently on her nationalistic resolve by abandoning the Gotengo to die with her people.
