A new theater just opened in town. It has 1 screen and offers balcony seating with a bar service up there. They run only top box office hits. I haven't been to it yet.
When I grew up there was a theater like this in my hometown (Except for the alcohol) that also ran old movies for matinees. I was always at the theater.
I have noticed, when driving by, that there is usually not very many cars there. I'm wondering if it will stay in business? In contrast, The mega-theaters I have been to are usually packed.
The poll for this topic asks what draws you to a theater.
I had to limit the choices but there are just as many reasons as there are people. We all have our reasons for hitting the theaters.
Is it important what type of theater it is?
Having frequented many different types of theaters I always liked the small - single screen theaters over the Mega-Screen Mega-Plex.
The Mega-Plex usually have the latest in equipment and offer more variety at the snack bar. The old mom & pop theaters offer a more personal experience.
Is there a proximity range for theaters you will visit?
I've noticed that sometimes there are advanced screenings and midnight screenings for some highly promoted movies. I saw the 2011 The Thing remake at a midnight show that I had to drive 80 miles to get to. The nearest Mega-Plex is a 40 mile ride one way. This new theater in town is 5 minutes away. How far will you drive to see a movie or experience a certain theater atmosphere? The long drive sometimes lets you get excited for what you are about to see and the long ride home lets you talk about what you just saw. A short ride lets you be spur of the moment and gets you done quickly.
Is it the 'Movie' or the 'Experience' that makes you choose to see it in a theater?
For me, I will only go to the 3D versions of movies at the theaters. I can watch any movie in 2D with surround sound at home. The 3D experience is what attracts me. And, not just any 3D movie, It has to be one that I really, really want to see in 3D. Like Godzilla 2014, I had to see that in 3D. Same with Jurassic World. When I went to see Jurassic World, it was already available online for free but I paid the $14 ticket to see it in 3D.
There are a lot of Big-Budget/High-Promotion movies that I don't want to see at the theaters but are 'must see' movies for me. The new Star Wars was one such movie.
Would you go to a theater for a re-showing of an old movie?
I would pay for the theater experience to go see a few oldies. Like Forbidden Planet or Omega Man. Rocky Horror Picture Show still has a theater experience worthy of the ticket price. Which old movies would you go see at a theater? I have seen a lot of talk online about a resurgence of the old movie matinee to help ticket sales for floundering theaters.
Theater decorations and movie posters are another thing that people go to theaters for. I have seen some really impressive stage construction and ornamental fixtures at the old mom & pop theaters and I get a laugh when I see posters for movies that are coming soon that I have already seen. The game rooms at the mega-plex are not much of an attraction to me but I have seen them jam packed with kids.
So, here is your chance to sound off about movie theaters. Do you love them, hate them or is it a non-issue?
